For the last 11 years I have lived in my house with no thermostat on my boiler. My boiler timer system was far from state of the art, with basically two timers that I could setup, one for morning and one for the evening.
No separate weekday or weekend settings, if we wanted it on at the weekend then it had to be switched to Constant. So you can see straight away how inefficient this could be, as the boiler will keep providing heat regardless of the temperature in the house (as I don’t have a thermostat!). So with this always in mind I was drawn to the Hive home heating solution, especially as it was on offer during the festive perio d (£199 instead of £249).
So after some initial research I telephoned British Gas to book an engineer visit to install Hive in my house, I was in luck as they had a spare slot the very next day! Not bad I thought, so I agreed and booked the engineer visit for the next day. At this point it was worth noting that I could have ordered light bulbs etc from Amazon but I didn’t want to risk it as it wasn’t until the engineer had been and verified that my boiler etc was compatible.
The next day arrived along with the engineer and it was good to know that all was well and my system was compatible with Hive. The engineer sat about installing the Hive system in the boiler, which took around 90 minutes (and was included in the cost of the system). We had an issue with the Hub connecting to the control unit in the boiler, but this was down to the shitty Virginmedia SuperHub2.. the continual pain in my ass that it is! Once the hub was finally connected to the wireless network and internet all was well! The main system for Hive consists of the following 3 items (all pictured below):

It’s worth pointing out that you don’t get a stand with the thermostat, so if you want to mount it on the wall you are fine. But if you want to move the thermostat about your place of residence then you are going to need to buy a stand, and boy they aren’t cheap!!!! I was lucky as there was a 25% discount on all Hive products as normally its an eye watering £19.99! Yes it is well built and you need it for the thermostat, but £19.99 really for a bit of metal!!
If you want to get one of these you can get it from here https://www.hivehome.com/products/hive-accessories
So now my kit was installed it was time to order some extras to go with it… look out for this in the next article about Hive.
26/02/2017: The installation is still going strong. No issues so far and I would still recommend it.
